Chapter 39 My wife is really beautiful
Chapter 39 My wife is really beautiful
The saleswoman smiled and said, "You both look great in these dresses; they're like they were made for you."
Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan looked at each other and smiled.
They were wearing new dresses and didn't want to take them off. The sales clerk helped them wrap up their old clothes, and the two of them continued shopping in their new dresses.
It was already past 3 p.m. when we came out of the department store.
Bai Rongbei checked the time: "It's time to go back; the road will be difficult to travel any later."
The four walked towards the parking area.
The streets were still crowded, and Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan, dressed in brightly colored dresses, attracted a lot of attention.
Some were envious, some were curious, and some... had ill intentions.
As they passed the entrance to a small alley, two people suddenly jumped out and blocked their way.
They were two young men, dressed in dirty clothes, with messy hair and shifty eyes; they didn't look like respectable people at all.
"Hey, ladies, those dresses are really pretty," a scarred man said with a grin. "Where did you buy them?"
Lin Weiwei subconsciously hid behind Bai Si'an.
Su Wanwan nervously grabbed Bai Rongbei's arm.
Bai Rongbei shielded Su Wanwan behind him, coldly looking at the two people: "Get out of the way."
The scarred man chuckled, "Comrade PLA soldier, don't be so fierce. We just want to talk to the two young ladies and make friends."
Another short, stout man joined in, his eyes darting between Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan: "Exactly, dressed so beautifully, isn't it all for show?"
Bai Rongbei's face darkened: "I'm saying this for the last time, get out of the way."
The scarred man's smile vanished: "What, do soldiers think they can bully ordinary people?"
His voice was so loud that it drew the attention of everyone around him.
Bai Si'an adjusted his glasses, stepped forward, and said calmly, "Comrades, we have other matters to attend to, please step aside."
"Who do you think you are?" The short, fat man shoved Bai Si'an.
Bai Si'an had difficulty with his right leg and was pushed backward, causing him to stagger a step. Lin Weiwei quickly helped him up.
"What are you doing!" Lin Weiwei was furious, glaring at the short, fat man.
"Oh, you're pretty fierce." The scarred man reached out to touch Lin Weiwei's face.
My hand was only halfway out when it was firmly grabbed by a large hand.
Bai Rongbei was already standing in front of him at some point, and with a forceful pull, the scarred man cried out in pain.
"Let go! Let go!" he struggled.
Bai Rongbei released his grip and said coldly, "Get lost."
The scarred man rubbed his wrist, his eyes fierce: "You dare lay a hand on me? Believe me, I'll report you to the military!"
"Go," Bai Rongbei said. "I'll wait."
He took a step forward, and the two thugs were so intimidated by his imposing manner that they took two steps back.
More and more people gathered around to watch the spectacle, and some whispered among themselves:
"It's those two thugs again..."
"He idles away his days, spending his time harassing women..."
"This time we've bitten off more than we can chew; they're the People's Liberation Army..."
Seeing that things were going badly, the two thugs walked away cursing, "You wait! This isn't over!"
Bai Rongbei ignored them and turned to look at Su Wanwan and Lin Weiwei: "Are you alright?"
Su Wanwan shook her head, her face still a little pale: "It's nothing..."
Lin Weiwei angrily retorted, "Who does he think he is! Daring to act like a hooligan in broad daylight!"
Baisian checked her arm: "Are you hurt?"
"No," Lin Weiwei said, "I was just startled."
As the crowd gradually dispersed, Bai Rongbei said, "Let's go, get in the car."
The four of them quickly walked to the parking spot and got into the car.
The car started, drove out of the city, and onto the dirt road in the Gobi Desert again.
This time, Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan were no longer in the mood to enjoy the scenery; they were still thinking about what had just happened.
"Why is this place so messy?" Lin Weiwei said softly.
"There are bad people everywhere," Bai Si'an said. "From now on, try not to go out alone."
Bai Rongbei glanced at Su Wanwan in the rearview mirror. She was still feeling lingering fear, her fingers tightly gripping the hem of her skirt.
"I'll accompany you when you go to the city in the future," he said.
Su Wanwan looked up at his eyes in the rearview mirror and nodded gently: "Mm."
The car was bumping along, but this time neither of them felt as uncomfortable.
Maybe it's because I'm in a good mood wearing a new dress, or maybe it's because... this person is by my side.
Lin Weiwei leaned against the car window, watching the Gobi Desert rushing past outside, and suddenly said, "Bai Si'an, thank you for earlier."
Bai Si'an turned and glanced at her: "What are you thanking me for?"
"Thank you for standing in front of me," Lin Weiwei said.
Bai Si'an pushed up his glasses and turned back: "It's only right."
Su Wanwan laughed, leaned over to the back of the driver's seat, and patted Bai Rongbei on the shoulder: "Commander Bai, you're super cool too! That last 'click'!" She made a grabbing motion, "That was amazing!"
Bai Rongbei didn't speak, but the corner of his mouth twitched slightly.
"Mm," Bai Rongbei responded.
The car became quiet, with only the sound of the engine and the wind.
As the sun sets in the west, it turns the Gobi Desert golden.
Lin Weiwei yawned and leaned on Su Wanwan's shoulder: "I'm sleepy..."
"Take a nap," Su Wanwan said. "I'll wake you when we get there."
Lin Weiwei closed her eyes and fell asleep in no time.
Su Wanwan also leaned against the car window, looking at the scenery outside.
Bai Rongbei looked at her in the rearview mirror and saw that her eyelids were also drooping. He said softly, "You should get some sleep too."
"Hmm..." Su Wanwan responded and closed her eyes.
After the two girls fell asleep, Bai Si'an whispered, "Brother, those two people just now..."
"Thugs," Bai Rongbei said. "I'll have someone investigate and send them in for a few years. That should change their thuggish ways."
Bai Si'an nodded and said nothing more.
He knew Bai Rongbei had tricks up his sleeve, and his brother definitely wouldn't let those two off so easily.
The car drove smoothly across the Gobi Desert, the setting sun casting a long shadow.
By the time they got back to the regimental headquarters, it was almost dark.
The car stopped at the entrance of the family compound, and Bai Rongbei gently patted Su Wanwan: "We're here."
Su Wanwan groggily opened her eyes and glanced out the window: "Have we arrived?"
"Um."
Lin Weiwei woke up too, stretched and said, "I slept so much... my back is stiff."
The four people got out of the car and unloaded the materials.
There were quite a few things piled up at the entrance of the yard, like a small mountain.
Aunt Zhang came out from next door and saw them. Her eyes immediately fell on Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan's dresses: "Oh, new dresses? They're so pretty!"
Lin Weiwei spun around: "Bought it at a department store!"
"This material...it's Atlas silk, isn't it?" Mrs. Zhang leaned closer to examine it. "It's so beautiful! It must have cost a lot of money!"
"It's alright..." Su Wanwan said vaguely.
Wang Xiuying also came out of the house. When she saw the two skirts, her eyes flickered, but she didn't say anything.
Bai Rongbei said to the two girls, "You two go back to your room and rest first. Si'an and I will move the materials inside."
"Let us help," Lin Weiwei said.
"No need," Bai Rongbei said, having already started moving cement. "You guys take a break."
Baisian also picked up a bundle of tarpaulin and walked into the yard.
The two girls could only stand aside and watch.
By the time the materials were all moved, it was completely dark.
Bai Rongbei washed his hands and said to Su Wanwan, "Shall we eat at the cafeteria tonight?"
"Okay." Su Wanwan nodded.
The four of them went to the cafeteria together again.
They encountered many people on the street, all staring at Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan's skirts.
"Commander Bai, your wife looks so beautiful, has she come to the city?" someone greeted.
"Mm," Bai Rongbei responded.
"It's so beautiful!"
Upon arriving at the cafeteria, they attracted everyone's attention.
The two girls were already pretty, and wearing these brightly colored dresses made them stand out even more among the uniform gray-blue-green military uniforms.
Even the food server glanced at them a couple more times, and his hands stopped trembling as he served them: "New dress? You look so smart!"
Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan were a little embarrassed, but they were still happy inside.
As we sat down to eat, several young officers at the next table kept glancing our way.
Bai Rongbei glanced at them, and the group quickly lowered their heads to eat.
Lin Weiwei whispered to Su Wanwan, "Look, they're all looking at us."
Su Wanwan blushed: "Don't say anymore..."
Bai Si'an pushed up his glasses: "Let's eat."
After finishing their meal, the four of them walked back.
The wind was strong at night in the Gobi Desert, making the skirt rustle loudly.
Lin Weiwei wrapped her coat tighter around herself: "It's a little cold."
Bai Si'an took off his coat and handed it to her: "Put this on."
