Chapter 47 The Spoiled Miss
Chapter 47 The Spoiled Miss
"Wanwan, it wasn't my idea... Hey, what happened to your hand? Are you hurt?" Lin Weiwei saw that Su Wanwan's hand was injured, so she stopped driving and asked her with concern.
"It's nothing, just some blisters. Bai Rongbei already took care of them for me," Su Wanwan replied.
"Wanwan, then stop working and go rest over there."
……
Bai Si'an sat on the bed, listening to the noises outside, feeling restless.
Should we let him lie down?
How could that be?
He tried moving his right shoulder; it hurt, but he could bear it.
My left hand is fine, and my leg is fine too. Although my right leg is a little inconvenient, I can still walk.
He stood up, walked around the room, and finally pushed open the door and went out.
In the courtyard, the project has entered its second half.
The brick walls of the toilet were basically finished, and Bai Rongbei and Zhao Dayong were installing the roof rafters.
Chen Jianjun was cutting roofing felt, while Liu Aiguo was mixing the last batch of mortar.
Lin Weiwei was helping to hand over the tools when she saw Bai Si'an come out. Her eyes widened: "Why are you out here? Didn't I tell you to rest?"
"I can't lie here." Bai Si'an walked over, looked at the completed wall, and said, "It's not bad."
Liu Aiguo looked up at him: "Technician Bai, how's your injury?"
"It's just a superficial wound, nothing serious." Bai Si'an squatted down, picked up a brick with his left hand, and weighed it in his hand. "Was it plastered?"
"Not yet," Liu Aiguo said, "We're waiting for you to come and check."
Bai Si'an nodded, stood up, walked to the wall, and touched the brick joints with his left hand: "Make sure the mortar is spread evenly, otherwise it will easily crack when it freezes in winter."
"I know," Liu Aiguo replied.
Lin Weiwei walked over and tugged at Bai Si'an's sleeve: "You really shouldn't do this anymore, go back to your room and lie down."
"I'm really fine." Bai Si'an looked at her. "Look, my left hand can move, and my legs can walk. I'll just watch from the side and give you some pointers, okay?"
Before Lin Weiwei could say anything more, Bai Rongbei came down from the roof.
"Let him stay here," Bai Rongbei said to Lin Weiwei. "He won't feel at ease if he doesn't keep an eye on him."
Lin Weiwei glanced at Bai Si'an, then at Bai Rongbei, and sighed, "Fine, but you can only talk, not fight."
Bai Si'an nodded.
With Bai Si'an providing guidance, the progress was much faster.
Although he couldn't do the work himself, he had a sharp eye and could spot any unevenness or lack of mortar at a glance.
"Take the third brick from the left in half a centimeter."
"Recheck the verticality of the corner."
"The mortar is too thick, add some water."
He spoke concisely, but every word hit the nail on the head. Liu Aiguo made the adjustments he suggested, and the results were indeed much better.
Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan also wanted to help, but Bai Rongbei stopped them.
"You two take a break," Bai Rongbei said. "Your hands are all blistered, don't make things worse."
"We can do some light work..." Su Wanwan whispered.
"No light work needed." Bai Rongbei didn't even look up. "Go inside and boil some water for everyone to drink."
These words were quite direct, and Su Wanwan bit her lip, no longer insisting.
Lin Weiwei was a little unconvinced, but after looking at the blisters on her hands and the wound on Su Wanwan's hand, she had nothing to say.
The two silently went to the kitchen to boil water.
Once the water boiled, they filled enamel mugs and carried them out bowl by bowl.
The men took the water, gulped it down with gusto, wiped their mouths, and went back to work.
Nobody gave them a second glance.
It seems like they really are just two pampered young ladies who can only serve tea and water.
Su Wanwan stood at the kitchen door, looking at the bustling scene in the yard, feeling empty inside.
She recalled Wang Xiuying's "model worker" appearance when she swept the yard, and the "you can't do anything" look in the eyes of the aunties in the family compound.
Even Bai Rongbei is now telling them to "not cause trouble."
Are they really that useless in everyone's eyes?
Lin Weiwei walked over and touched her arm: "What are you thinking about?"
Su Wanwan shook her head: "It's nothing. It's just that... we seem pretty useless."
Lin Weiwei was taken aback for a moment, then understood what she meant.
She looked at the blisters on her hands, then at the men in the yard, sweating profusely, and sighed, "Yeah, you're right. We can't dig holes, we can't build walls, we can't even mix mortar... It seems like we've really become a burden."
Neither of them spoke; the only sound in the kitchen was the crackling of the firewood in the stove.
After a while, Lin Weiwei suddenly said, "But we also have our uses."
"What's it for?" Su Wanwan asked.
"For example..." Lin Weiwei's eyes darted around, "For example, we can provide logistical support! Look, they work so hard, they deserve a good meal tonight, right? Let's go get them something delicious to treat them!"
Su Wanwan's eyes lit up: "Yes! We can cook..."
Before she could finish speaking, she remembered the "kitchen disaster" and her face fell again: "But the two of us... don't seem to be very good at cooking either."
Lin Weiwei also remembered the billowing smoke, and her lips twitched: "Then...then let's go buy some! A state-run restaurant! Order some hearty dishes and bring them back!"
That's a good idea.
As the two were discussing, Bai Rongbei walked in.
His face was covered in sweat, and the back of his military uniform was soaked. He held an empty water jug in his hand: "Is there any more water?"
"Yes, yes, yes!" Su Wanwan quickly took the jar and poured hot water from the thermos. "It's freshly boiled, be careful it's hot."
Bai Rongbei took it, blew on it, and took a small sip.
Looking at his sweat-drenched temples and the dust on his face, Su Wanwan felt a pang of disappointment well up inside her again.
"Commander Bai..." she whispered.
"Hmm?" Bai Rongbei looked up.
"We... Weiwei and I are thinking of going to the state-run restaurant to buy some groceries tonight," Su Wanwan said. "Everyone works so hard, they deserve to eat something good."
Bai Rongbei didn't say anything. He finished drinking the water in the jar, then took out his wallet from his pocket, pulled out some money and food coupons, and handed them to Su Wanwan.
"Let's order some hearty dishes," he said, "and some steamed buns too. We'll talk about it when we get back if we don't have enough money."
Su Wanwan took the money and was stunned.
She didn't expect Bai Rongbei to agree so readily and even give her money.
"This...this money should be paid by us...we don't need your money, we have our own money." She said softly, then pushed Bai Rongbei's hand that was offering money back.
"Alright then, let me know if you need more money." After Bai Rongbei finished speaking, he turned and walked out, but stopped at the door and looked back at her. "Be careful on the way, don't take the side roads."
"Yes!" Su Wanwan nodded vigorously, and most of the gloom in her heart dissipated.
Su Wanwan and Lin Weiwei are, after all, daughters of capitalists, and they also have their own little savings.
The two of them took out a lot of money, planning to have a nice meal.
"Let's order more meat dishes," Lin Weiwei said. "They do physical labor, they need to replenish their energy."
"Okay!" Su Wanwan nodded. "Buy some more eggs, and we'll boil them for them tomorrow morning."
Before leaving, Bai Rongbei instructed, "Come back early, the road will be difficult to travel after dark."
Bai Si'an also said, "Don't skimp, pick the good ones."
"Okay!" Lin Weiwei waved and pulled Su Wanwan out the door.
