Chapter 33 First Attendance
Chapter 33 First Attendance
Lin Chen had read about the "dimensional stability anchor" in the onboarding handbook.
He couldn't remember the details, but in short, this device could anchor a space to the real world.
When a region experiences subspace erosion, as the spacetime structure is destroyed, space will continue to sink until it completely falls into subspace.
The indicator used to describe this degree of depression is subspace depth, abbreviated as D.
When Marcus said they would arrive at D-1 in half an hour, Lin Chen understood the gravity of the situation.
Generally speaking, D-1 is the standard subspace depth, which means the entire school would disappear.
"Is anyone still not out?" Lucy asked Marcus, who was holding an umbrella alone.
"Everyone who could be evacuated has been evacuated, but the subspace lens shows there are still a few classrooms that haven't been evacuated," Marcus lit a cigarette. "The evacuation teams we sent in haven't responded yet, they..."
No sooner had the words left his mouth than a shout came from inside the blockade:
"Wounded! There are wounded here?"
Lin Chen looked over and saw two investigators from the Second Division carrying an injured person and running towards the school gate, staggering.
Marcus frowned and immediately went to meet him.
Lin Chen and his group exchanged glances and followed.
Inside the makeshift medical tent, they met the wounded soldier.
He looked as if he were trapped in some kind of nightmare, his eyes tightly closed and his whole body trembling.
"...The interior of that school has begun to subspace," an investigator from the Second Division explained to Marcus. "At first, the anomalous entities we encountered were relatively conventional Delta-level entities, which were easy to deal with. But as we went deeper... things started to go wrong."
"He first collapsed to the ground, convulsing, and then something crawled out of his shadow..."
"That thing looks like a praying mantis, it's huge, and conventional firepower can't destroy it, so we can only take it with us and retreat first."
After the investigator finished his description, Marcus asked further questions:
Do abnormal entities share common characteristics?
"Absolutely none, cannot be categorized." The investigator shook his head.
"A classic case of a rare disease," Lucy said.
"The Delta-class might be a misjudgment," Li Zhanyi concluded. "A large number of entities without commonalities... new individuals born from the shadows... these entities are probably just derivatives of some larger entity."
"In the worst-case scenario, gamma-level."
After hearing Li Zhanyi's assessment, Marcus glanced at Lin Chen and then spoke:
"I suggest you let your section chief handle this; it's not wise to act rashly in the current situation."
"There are still people inside," Lin Chen said instinctively. "Time is life."
Li Zhanyi glanced approvingly at Lin Chen, then turned to Marcus:
"Are the backup teams for the three departments ready?"
"They're in position, right next to the tent," Marcus said.
"Let's go, collect our things, and then go inside."
After Li Zhanyi finished speaking, he decisively walked towards the tent entrance.
Lin Chen and Lucy followed, and the group crawled out of the tent and entered the tent next door.
Lin Chen couldn't help but admire the efficiency of the rapid response team: after receiving the alarm, each department performed its duties, the second department sealed off the scene and investigated, and the third department transported support supplies to the site.
Just when the situation became unmanageable, Section 1 arrived.
At a small white table in the center of the tent, an elderly white man with short, neat hair was unpacking packages and separating different injections.
The moment Li Zhanyi saw the old man, he beamed with joy and went to greet him:
"Professor Jürgen! What brings you here?"
The old man looked up and, upon seeing Li Zhanyi, a kind smile appeared on his face.
"Zhanyi," he nodded slightly, "happened to be at the Investigation Bureau, so I came over to help out."
"Let me introduce you!" Li Zhanyi turned to Lin Chen with a smile, "Professor Jürgen Eisenberg, our expert in anomalies, subspace analysis, and anti-anomaly countermeasures!"
"I don't have that many formal titles..." Professor Jürgen waved his hand, and Lin Chen even caught a glimpse of shyness on the old man's face.
"Hello, Professor Jürgen," Lin Chen nodded slightly, "I am Lin Chen, a new investigator from Section One."
"You're so young," Jürgen smiled. "Well, I suppose you've read 'The Warp Exploration Guide'?"
"Actually, I just took office today and haven't had a chance to..." Lin Chen scratched his head.
"I'll prepare the injection for you this time, but you'll have to take care of it yourself next time."
As Jürgen spoke, he began loading the syringes into the syringe pouch.
Lucy and Li Zhanyi, on the other hand, skillfully selected injections from different small baskets and stuffed them into their own injection kits.
"Here, take it."
Professor Jürgen quickly prepared the needles and handed the bag to Lin Chen.
"First, inject the blue one. That's a sanity stabilizer. Inject it before entering the subspace. For every 1 unit of depth, the injection dose doubles every half hour."
"You can get one injection now, just an intramuscular injection. If it's not out after half an hour, you can get another one."
Lin Chen took out a "rationality stabilizer" from his syringe, inserted it into the syringe's reservoir, rolled up his sleeve, and injected it into his arm.
The syringe was needleless, so it didn't hurt. As my arm swelled slightly, a cool sensation spread throughout my body.
He felt that his body temperature had dropped by several degrees.
"You'll most likely not need the rest. If you do need them, let Zhanyi teach you."
After Jürgen finished speaking, he turned around, took out three more magazines, and tossed them to the three men.
"Here you go, it's fully loaded with 9mm pressure bullets, I reckon you'll need it."
"As expected of a professor, have you already guessed the nature of the anomalous entity?" Li Zhanyi blinked.
Professor Jürgen smiled and shook his head, saying:
"It's just experience, go on."
"..."
The three left the tent. At this moment, the rain grew heavier and heavier, and lightning flashed in the clouds, flowing with a dark blue hue.
"The spatial sinking is intensifying," Li Zhanyi said, looking up at the sky from the edge of the umbrella. "Let's go, hurry up."
She had a short spear-like object at her waist, which Lin Chen guessed must be the "dimensional stability anchor".
Lucy was the first to enter the cordon; given her height, she only needed to slightly lower her head to get through.
She turned around, watching Lin Chen struggle to crawl through the blockade, and said:
"Little brother, stand a little further back in a bit, just bring up the rear. Old Jiang must have some special skills to get you into the department, but you're still a newcomer, so don't rush to show off."
"Okay." Lin Chen nodded.
He also has some azure matter stored in the "Mirage City," so if anything happens, he can simply project it onto "Skybreaker" to break the deadlock.
First time attending class, watch carefully and learn well.
Lin Chen and Li Zhanyi exchanged a glance, and together they followed Lucy across the large square at the school's main gate, heading towards the main teaching building.
As Lin Chen entered the shadows of the teaching building, he suddenly felt a surge of intense panic, which was quickly enveloped by the coolness and gradually subsided.
"The depth here is decreasing faster and faster..." Li Zhanyi looked at the thermometer on his wrist. "The closer we get to the teaching building, the lower it gets. Here it's about D-0.67... The subspace is almost overlapping with reality."
"Get ready, anything can happen next."
